MaxGXL: An Idiot's Guide To Glutathione

We're all getting older, there's no escaping that. We look in the mirror and we see gray hairs and wrinkles, but worse yet, we might feel a lag in energy, feel tired, feel achy, and just in general "feel old." What does it mean?

Study their lives, read their stories and autobiographies, and listen to their words when they are interviewed and on tape. Here are two things you can do to put The Parable of the Talents into action:
First, make a decision that, starting today, you will think and talk only about the financial success you desire. At the same time, you will refuse to talk about or dwell upon your financial problems.

Second, instead of saying "I can't afford it," you will ask the question "How can I afford it?" When you think of something that you want or need that you don't have the money for at the time, the only question to ask is "How?" How can you get it? What can you do to achieve it? Hello All!

I usually don’t use this blog as a political platform. But enough is enough.

Our country needs to be a free enterprise bastion. Bailing out company after company is nothing more than corporate welfare.

The Automotive Industry as it stands will NEVER make it. If we throw this money at the same managers that caused the problems, we just exacerbate them. Let them all FAIL, and then restructure.

The following is the best treatise of the issue that I have found, by the man who should have been President...if all of the “sheep” hadn’t been sleeping.

Let Detroit Go Bankrupt

If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses.

Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.

I love cars, American cars. I was born in Detroit, the son of an auto chief executive. In 1954, my dad, George Romney, was tapped to run American Motors when its president suddenly died. The company itself was on life support — banks were threatening to deal it a death blow. The stock collapsed. I watched Dad work to turn the company around — and years later at business school, they were still talking about it. From the lessons of that turnaround, and from my own experiences, I have several prescriptions for Detroit’s automakers.

First, their huge disadvantage in costs relative to foreign brands must be eliminated. That means new labor agreements to align pay and benefits to match those of workers at competitors like BMW, Honda, Nissan and Toyota.Furthermore, retiree benefits must be reduced so that the total burden per auto for domestic makers is not higher than that of foreign producers.That extra burden is estimated to be more than $2,000 per car. Think what that means: Ford, for example, needs to cut $2,000 worth of features and quality out of its Taurus to compete with Toyota’s Avalon. Of course the Avalon feels like a better product — it has $2,000 more put into it. Considering this disadvantage, Detroit has done a remarkable job of designing and engineering its cars. But if this cost penalty persists, any bailout will only delay the inevitable.

Second, management as is must go. New faces should be recruited from unrelated industries — from companies widely respected for excellence in marketing, innovation, creativity and labor relations.The new management must work with labor leaders to see that the labor and management comes to an end. This division is a hold over from the early years of the last century, when unions brought workers job security and better wages and benefits. But as Walter Reuther, the former head of the United Automobile Workers, said to my father, “Getting more and more pay for less and less work is a dead-end street.”You don’t have to look far for industries with unions that went down that road.

Companies in the 21st century cannot perpetuate the destructive labor relations of the 20th. This will mean a new direction for the U.A.W., profit sharing or stock grants to all employees and a change in Big Three management culture.The need for collaboration will mean accepting sanity in salaries and perks. At American Motors, my dad cut his pay and that of his executive team, he bought stock in the company, and he went out to factories to talk to workers directly.

Get rid of the planes, the executive dining rooms —all the symbols that breed resentment among the hundreds of thousands who will also be sacrificing to keep the companies afloat. Investments must be made for the future. No more focus on quarterly earnings or the kind of short-term stock appreciation that means quick riches for executives with options. Manage with an eye on cash flow,balance sheets and long-term appreciation.

Invest in truly competitive products and innovative technologies — especially fuel-saving designs —that may not arrive for years. Starving research and development is like eating the seed corn. Just as important to the future of American car makers is the sales force. When sales are down, you don’t want to lose the only people who can get them to grow. So don’t fire the best dealers, and don’t crush them with new financial or performance demands they can’t meet.

It is not wrong to ask for government help, but the automakers should come up with a win-win proposition. I believe the federal government should invest substantially more in basic research — on new energy sources,fuel-economy technology, materials science and the like — that will ultimately benefit the automotive industry, along with many others.

I believe Washington should raise energy research spending to $20 billion a year, from the $4 billion that is spent today. The research could be done at universities, at research labs and even through public-private collaboration. The federal government should also rectify the imbedded tax penalties that favor foreign car makers. But don’t ask Washington to give shareholders and bondholders a free pass —they bet on management and they lost. The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs.

The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk.In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.

A friend sent me this...a must read!

The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and wants a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?'

A. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than has seen in the last year?

E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic without having to present identification papers as we move through each state.

F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession?

Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?Say what you want, but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage.

Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day or at least be thankful and appreciative.

With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?

When would be a great time to pay off your debt and change from being a spender to a saver?

We all have the same amount of time. It is how we use that time that is important.

I also know from the training that I have received that setting goals requires the following:

Name the Dream.

Break the Dream down to Goals.

Break the Goals down to Tasks.

Number the Tasks according to priority.

Plug the tasks into your daily planner. (If you don’t have a planner, get one)

How do you eat an elephant?…One bite at a time.

You can set them in the following areas: Spiritual/Mental, Family, Physical, Business, and Financial.

Five areas. One task a day per area. Five days a week.

The Ivory and Gold Tablecloth

At Christmas time, men and women everywhere gather in their churches to wonder anew at the greatest miracle the world has ever known. But the story I like best to recall was not a huge miracle -- not exactly.

It happened to a pastor who was very young. His church was very old. Once, long ago, it had flourished. Famous men had preached from its pulpit, prayed before its altar. Rich and poor alike had worshipped there and built it beautifully. Now, the good days had passed from the section of town where it stood. But the pastor and his young wife believed in their run-down church. They felt that with hard work and lots of faith they could get it in shape. Together they went to work.

But, late in December, a severe storm whipped through the river valley, and the worst blow fell on the church -- a huge chunk of rain-soaked plaster fell out of the inside wall just behind the altar. Sorrowfully the pastor and his wife swept away the mess, but they couldn't hide the ragged hole.

The pastor looked at it and had to remind himself quickly, "Thy will be done!" But his wife wept, "Christmas is only two days away!"

That afternoon the dispirited couple attended the auction held for the benefit of a youth group. The auctioneer opened a box and shook out of its folds a gloriously beautiful, very ornately sewn, gold and ivory lace tablecloth.

It was a magnificent item, nearly 15 feet long. But it, too, dated from a long vanished era. Who, today, had any use for such a thing? There were a few halfhearted bids. Then the pastor was seized with what he thought was a great idea.

He bid it in for $6.50.

He carried the glorious gold and ivory lace cloth back to the church and very carefully put it up on the wall behind the altar. It completely hid the hole! And the extraordinary beauty of its shimmering handwork cast a fine, holiday glow over the chancel. It was a great triumph. Happily he went back to preparing his Christmas sermon.

Just before noon on the day of Christmas Eve, as the pastor was opening the church, he noticed a woman standing in the cold at the bus stop. "The bus won't be here for 40 minutes!" he called, and invited her into the church to get warm.

She told him that she had come from the city that morning to be interviewed for a job as governess to the children of one of the wealthy families in town but she had been turned down. A Jewish war refugee, her English was imperfect.

The woman sat down in a pew and chafed her hands and rested. After a while she dropped her head and prayed. She looked up and saw the great gold and ivory cloth. She rose suddenly and walked up the steps of the chancel.

She looked at the beautiful tablecloth with remembering eyes.
The pastor smiled and started to tell her about the storm damage, but she didn't seem to listen. She took up a fold of the cloth and lovingly rubbed it between her fingers, tears welled in her kind eyes. But they were happy tears of recognition.

"It is mine!" she said. "It is my banquet cloth!" She lifted up a corner and showed the surprised pastor that there were initials monogrammed on it. "My husband had the cloth made especially for me in Brussels! There could not be another like it."

For the next few minutes the woman and the pastor talked excitedly together. She explained that she was Viennese; that being Jews, she and her husband wanted to flee from the Nazis. They were advised to go separately. Her husband put her on a train for Switzerland. They planned that he would join her as soon as he could arrange to ship their household goods across the border. She never saw him again. Later she heard that he had died in a concentration camp.

"I have always felt that it was my fault -- to leave without him," she said. "Perhaps these years of wandering have been my punishment!" The pastor tried to comfort her and urged her to take the beautiful cloth with her. But she refused saying, "no, no, the cloth has found it's way to you. You need it. It has a purpose here. I want you to have it. I am happy knowing you have it."

She gazed lovingly up at the magnificent gold and ivory lace cloth, then quietly went away.
As the church began to fill on Christmas Eve, it was clear that the magnificent cloth was going to be a great success. It had been skillfully designed to look its best by candlelight.

The glorious gold and ivory lace cloth actually glowed in the candlelight! It cast lovely fine designs on the walls and ceiling of the church. Everyone looked around in wonderment, and a tranquil ambiance was cast over all.

After the service, the pastor stood at the doorway. Many people told him that the church looked more beautiful than ever before.

From the generous donations that were given, a few days later the pastor had the local jeweler who was also the clock-and-watch repairman come to repair the church chimes.

The repairman's gentle middle-aged face drew into a look of great astonishment! As if in a trance he walked right up to the beautiful cloth and looked intently!

"It is strange," he said in his soft accent. "Many years ago my wife - God rest her -- and I owned such a cloth. My wife put it on the table" -- and here he gave a big smiled -- "for holidays and when the Rabbi came to dinner."

The pastor suddenly became very excited. He told the jeweler about the woman who had been in church to get warm, saw the cloth, and recognized it to be hers! The startled jeweler clutched the pastor's arm. "Can it be?" he said through desperate tears.

Together the two got in touch with the family who had interviewed the women for the governess position, got her address, then they both drove to the city.

The jeweler knocked on the heavy, weathered, door. As it opened, there stood his beloved wife. The many years of separation were immediately washed away by their blissfully tears, as they held each other in loving embraces, never to be parted again. True love seems to find a way.

To all who hear this story, the joyful purpose of the storm was to knocked a hole in the wall of the church.
So my friends, the next time something knocks a hole in your dreams, your goals - Just remember to have enough faith, enough belief in those dreams and goals, to lovingly and creatively hang your own brilliant lace cloth over the temporary mar. Then watch the miracles come.

Eniva Corporation Buys New Building

Minneapolis/St Paul Business Journal:

Eniva Corp., a maker of nutritional supplements and one of the fastest-growing companies in the Twin Cities, has put down hard cash to buy a huge building in Anoka.

Eniva has a contract to buy a 435,000-square-foot building along Highway 10 at the entrance to the Anoka Enterprise Park.

Terms of the sale weren't disclosed, but asking price for the property was between $6 million and $7 million. When the deal closes in September, Eniva will start redeveloping the 26-acre site.

Eniva plans to invest at least as much to renovate the building as to acquire it.

The firm plans to use part of the existing structure as a corporate campus for its 200 employees; that facility will include a training center, multimedia production studio, a research lab and space for manufacturing, packaging and distribution.

It will offset its costs by parceling off about 10 to 12 acres of the site to other users.

CEO Andrew Baechler, who founded and co-owns Eniva with his twin brother Benjamin Baechler, said he hopes to use the facility to "create the image of an international headquarters for our organization."
The company now leases only about 100,000 square feet in three locations in Blaine.

The company had between $65 million and $70 million in revenue in 2006, up from $30.6 million in 2005 and $13.6 million in 2004.

Eniva sells its products through a network of 250,000 independent distributors, usually home-based entrepreneurs, much like cosmetics maker Mary Kay. Last year the company's biggest product was a line of liquid vitamin supplements called Vibe that accounted for nearly 60 percent of its sales. It also makes water fortified with minerals and electrolytes -- a big segment that's also drawn interest from Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo. Inc. -- and other products including shampoo, salad oil and laundry detergent. One of its recent product launches was an Omega-3 supplement pill.

Baechler said the firm should be able to keep growing at a fast clip thanks to its expansion last year into Canada, Great Britain and Mexico.

Eniva Corporation Acheives Numer 4 Ranking in "Fast 50"

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal unveiled its annual list of Fast 50 companies, honoring awardees at a ceremony in downtown Minneapolis Thursday night.

This week's edition of the paper includes the annual special publication honoring the 50 fastest-growing private companies in the Twin Cities. The businesses are ranked based on percentage revenue growth over the last three years.

This year, the combined revenue of the 2007 Fast 50 honorees hit $1.55 billion for fiscal year 2006, an increase of 44.9 percent from last year's composite figure of $1.7 billion.

However, the average THREE YEAR growth rate for all 50 companies was down from last year. This year, the average was 161.2 percent; last year it was 168.5 percent.

In the No. 1 spot was Plymouth-based project management firm Logisolve Consulting. The company increased revenue OVER THREE YEARS by 550.72 percent, from $1.8 million in 2004 to $11.9 million in 2007.

Cambridge researcher Aubrey de Grey believes aging is a preventable phenomenon, much like a disease, stating that aging is merely a side effect of being alive.

Here he explains his belief that humans could live for centuries, if only we approach the aging process as “an engineering problem.” (replacing bad cells with good ones?)

He outlines the seven basic ways people age, and how to solve each one. And if we get to work now, he says, humans alive today could live to be 1,000.

According to de Grey, these “7 Deadly Things” are responsible for your physical aging, and are the basis of his “engineering approach” solutions:

Cell loss/atrophy

Death-resistant cells

Nuclear mutations and epimutation

smtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) mutations

Protein cross links

Junk inside cells

Junk outside cells

(Hummmm...I wonder what helps this?)

Essentially, de Grey’s hypothesis states that if you can keep these seven deadly cell-damaging processes below the threshold of pathology – the state where processes start to break cells down until your body dies from the cumulative damage – you will be able to extend your life indefinitely. (Hummmm...again!)

In other anti-aging news, published in Best Life magazine, two preeminent aging experts have placed a bet on whether or not someone living today will be alive in 2150.

Steven Austad, biologist and professor of cellular and structural biology at the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, believes someone alive today will still be alive in 2150. For the past 20 years, Austad has researched the fundamentals of aging, and has been able to drastically extend the lifespan of various animals by tinkering with their genes, or restricting their calorie intake. ( I don't think that this matters..as long as you are consuming the right things. ORGANIC veggies, fruits and nuts. Grass fed beef, free range chicken, cage free eggs, a good whey protien :). Stay away from sugar and starches, increase your intake of protien from the good sources listed here and increase your muscle mass..get off of the couch...WORKOUT!)

Jay Olshansky, on the other hand, believes there are too many hurdles to be overcome, suspecting any benefit derived from anti-aging drugs will probably be wiped out by rising threats to public health, such as obesity and diabetes. (Keep your weight in check, watch your sugar and homocysteine) In fact, the demographic models Olshansky and his colleagues have built project that obesity alone will cut the life expectancy of Americans by two to five years within the next 50 years.

Both experts agree, however, that science is making radical advances. Scientists now have a much more detailed understanding of how shutting down certain genes and restricting calories slow your aging process.
The shared factor between all long-lived animals is their superior capability to repair their DNA. (Watch for good things here!!!)

Edward Masoro, at the University of Texas, pioneered research in the 1990’s, showing that a low-calorie diet switches on a key gene called SIRT1 that controls a network of other genes, which in turn create proteins that protect cells from damage. The idea proposed by more than a dozen pharmaceutical companies working on anti-aging drugs, is that you may one day be able to simply take a pill that switches on SIRT1 in your cells. (Once again, a pill that cures everything and lines their pockets with money!)

One such molecule is resveratrol, produced by grapes and other plants. Sirtis Pharmaceuticals, Elixir Pharmaceutical, and about a dozen others are pursuing these kinds of molecular-based anti-aging drugs. (Or, instead of once again giving your money to the pharmaceutical companies, you could take a supplement that has this and drink some good red wine!)

The current old-age record holder is Jeanne Calment, a Frenchwoman who died in 1997 at the age of 122, after smoking for nearly 100 years.

Some years ago, 20/20 did a feature story on Amway. They spent 19 minutes interviewing whiners and complainers, several distributors who had failed and showed garages full of products they couldn’t sell.

During the last minutes of the show, Bill Britt was interviewed in front of his palatial home. He was asked, “Mr. Britt, this business has obviously worked for you. What is your secret?”

He replied, “There is no secret. I simply showed the plan to 1200 people, 900 said ‘No’ and only 300 signed up. Out of those 300, only 85 did anything at all-out of those 85, only 35 were serious and out of those 35, 11 made me a millionaire.”

Jason Boreyko, now president of New Vision, told this story recently. When he was a distributor with Matol Botanical International, he signed up 50 people. He heard a lot of no’s on the way to those 50. Jason took one man he knew would be terrific in the business to lunch, told him about the business and the man said “no”. Jason took the man to lunch again the next month and told him the updates. Once again the man said “no”. That went on for 6 months. The 7th month something changed for the man and he said “Yes”. That man has made Jason over one million dollars. Jason worked through his numbers.

According to Richard Poe and “Wave Three”, while starting Amway, Rich Devos and Jay Van Andel, America’s eleventh richest people, recruited 500 people, 495 dropped out. The five that didn’t quit built Amway. All 7 Billion of Amway’s business was built under those 5 people. Jay and Rich had to work through their numbers.

Here is the lesson: Your success is directly related to the degree to which you are willing to work to find others like yourself who are committed to success. Bill Britt’s numbers were 11 out of 1200. Jason Boreyko’s odds were 1 out of 50.

Would you be willing to go through 200 people to find the one who would make you $50,000 a month? Or go through 200 people to make you a millionaire? Or hear uncounted “No’s” to sign up 50 people to find a million dollar person? I hope you will.

It’s easier when you know the odds up front. But here is the catch. You have your own set of odds and won’t know what they are until AFTER YOU’VE SUCCEEDED.
